Totoro
The inspiration for Totoro is not only obvious, it's practically in your face about it...
Totoro, like the original character, is quite passive and loves to nap.
He hides a lot from people, but has a soft spot for children.
The leaf on his head and the mushrooms/leaves on his back will wilt when he's experiencing negative emotions.
The soot spirits around him come and go as they please but enjoy Totoro's company since he tends to protect them.
A little totoro is almost always seen sitting on his head or back, and often taking naps inside his scarf.
